Balance Lab is a free tool that helps middle and high school students
learn to balance chemical equations. Balancing equations is a
foundational skill in chemistry: every chemical reaction must obey the
law of conservation of mass, meaning the number of atoms of each
element must be the same on both sides of the equation.
What Does It Mean to Balance an Equation?
When you write a chemical equation, the reactants on the left must
contain exactly the same atoms as the products on the right. Students
adjust coefficients — the numbers placed in front of each compound —
until every element is accounted for equally. Subscripts within a
formula are never changed; only coefficients are adjusted.
For example, burning propane involves the reaction
C₃H₈ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O. To balance
it, you work through carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen counts
systematically until both sides match.
Why Is Balancing Hard?
Many students struggle because oxygen often appears in multiple
products, polyatomic ions can be confusing to track, and trial-and-error
without a strategy feels frustrating. Balance Lab addresses these

giving away answers.
